Blog Post - How To Successfully Navigate All The Sales This Summer

Has your inbox been flooded the past few days with sale emails?

It feels like every holiday is now celebrated with 20% off or buy 1 get one 50% off. And while I love a good sale, even for me (a professional stylist) it can feel overwhelming. There’s so many options that it can be tough to narrow down where to start.

There’s two things I typically see happen. Either you end up buying nothing because it feels like too much to navigate OR you end up buying things you don’t even need simply because they were on sale. Sound familiar?

So how do you take advantage of the sales without feeling overwhelmed or mindlessly buying? Here’s my top 5 suggestions to create ease and fun while you shop… and it all comes down to preparation!

  1. Keep a note in your phone (or on a piece of paper if you prefer) with a list of key pieces and accessories you want to add to your wardrobe. Every time you think of something or realize a need while getting dressed, add it here as your master shopping list. This is what you’ll use to shop when the sales come around.
  2. Screenshot outfits that you like online or in magazines and save them all together. Decide what you already have in your closet to create these looks, and add anything you don’t have to that master list.
  3. Utilize the “wish list” or favorites section on sites like Nordstrom, Boomingdales and Revolve to save things you like while online shopping prior to sales. Revisit these during sales to see if any of your favorites have gone on sale.
  4. Ask yourself why you are shopping during sales. Is it to fill a need in your wardrobe or is it filling another void? Oftentimes we buy to make ourselves feel good, yet that high is fleeting if done for the wrong reason. Get really clear on your intention.
  5. After adding pieces to your bag, walk away before you purchase. Give yourself some space to think about whether this purchase is going to benefit your future self. You may need to take a few hours or sleep on it before making the purchase.

This preparation will allow you to approach sales like a shopping ninja! If you see that you really could use some new tops (from your master list), then it’s super easy to focus solely on that section of whichever site you’re shopping. It saves you time and energy and a lot of mental space.

You have control over the sales; the sales DO NOT have control over you.

Ok maybe that last line is a bit drastic, but you get the point. And you’ll thank me when you save yourself hours of mindless scrolling through 20,000 pairs of jeans that are on sale when you already have a closet full of jeans.

So let me know, what’s the first thing on your wish list this summer? Comment below as I’d love to hear what you’ll be shopping for!
